You said that you learned a few things working on this~ now I'm curious!
I think as far as those arms go, it's really just a matter of making them look 3-D. Ditto on hands~ and since hands and eyes are the "most expressive" of our features, it makes sense that understanding them takes time! Anatomy will come, but it'll come with practice....repetition........really, you're memorizing HOW that complex spider of bones and muscles (aka. a hand) will look when it balls up....hangs this way.....crumples that way......because you'll find that generally all hands keep to these rules.
To keep from getting bored, find shots that you find EXCITING, and draw 'em! Calvin Klein ads are great refs for graceful, long-limbed poses........for muscles being used in different ways, try Googling gymnasts, or singers (yup, the oft-shirtless kind~ "I'm practicing anatomy, I swear!!"
